Walking and driving instructions

The Brook Stream Waterfalls are just 15-20 minutes’ drive away from Nelson. The road surface is sealed.

From Nelson travel to The Brook via Brook St. From The Brook keep following Brook St until you reach Brook Valley Holiday Park. You need to drive through the park (if asked, you need to tell that you are going to The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary). The actual Sactuary is a few meters away from the Holiday Park. It is well signposted and has a big car park. Usually, it is open Fri-Sun 10am-4pm. Check on the official site whether it is open or not before heading there.

From the parking, go through the Information Centre, pay a donation fee (5$pp or 15$ per family) there and follow The Loop track (do not cross the stream). You will reach a first waterfall within 5-7 minutes. It is a short, 2-3m, waterfall, which you won’t miss. You can walk down to its basin.

From here keep following the Loop track until you get to the first bridge. Either cross the bridge and follow Valley Track, or if you don’t cross the bridge then follow a more challenging Nikau Track. After 10-15 minutes of walking you will reach the second bridge, and within 1-2 minutes the dam. From here keep following the Valley Track. The first cascades are reaching within a couple of minutes. Then you reach the Forks Crossing, which is a wet-shoes one for most of the time (usually an ankle-deep, but could be a knee-deep after a rain).

There is a waterfall on the main stream (upstream) which you will see while crossing the stream. The closer approach is possible, but it is definitely a knee-deep stream walk. There is also one more waterfall which you will see from the main track, staring after the crossing.

Return via the same route. Total walking time is about 1hour. Or continue your walk and get to the Ferny Flats and then to Champagne Pool.
