Walking and driving instructions
Pine Valley Waterfall is 45 minutes’ drive away from Blenheim, or 55 minutes from Picton. The road is unsealed for the last 6 km, with one stream ford which can be impassible after heavy rain. From Blenheim travel north-west along the SH-6. In Kaituna turn left onto Northbank Rd and follow it for the next 25km. Then turn right onto Pine Valley Road and follow it for the next 6km. It is an unsealed forestry road with one river ford, and multiple holes. Take extra care. There is a long drop toilet and DOC signed at the parking (but no tables). There is a river access there in case if you need some water or wish to swim. From the parking follow an almost flat and nice Pine Valley Track (which runs along the Pine Valley Stream) for roughly 10 minutes. There is a stunning but short cascade (small waterfall) en route as well as a couple of swimming holes. A signed side track branches off from the main track. It's about 5-10 minutes uphill walk (lots of roots, and can be slippery after rain) from the main trail to the waterfall’s base. The return is via the same route, total walking time is about 30-40 minutes. The waterfall might be almost dry during summer months, best time to visit - after a rain. The waterfall is 10m high, or 15-20m including downstream cascades. |
