Waipori Falls

Waipori Falls

Despite the fact of the poor visibility from the official lookout platform, Waipori Falls (second name - Crystal Falls) is a spectacular tall waterfall on the Waipori River. If you can find the better spot apart from the official one, probably the waterfall will become more charming.

Walking and driving instructions

Waipori Falls is roughly 1-1.5 hours from Dunedin. The road surface is sealed, except for the last 16 km which is a gravel road.

From Dunedin head south on the SH-1 for 32 km, then turn right into Henley-Berwick Rd and follow it for the next 5.5 km. Turn right into Maungatua Rd; then immediately turn left into Waipori Falls Rd. Stay on this road for the next 17.5 km until you reach a huge car park near the Power Generation Station. Toilets and picnic tables are available there.

The top of the waterfall is visible from the car park, but not the full falls. From the parking follow Crystal Falls Walk which leads to the waterfall's viewing platform. The walk (10 minutes one way) is very easy one and goes through the native forest. Unfortunately, the waterfall can't be fully seen from the platform (there are lots of trees there). Probably in good weather, you can descent from the platform and find a better waterfall's view. If you do so, please take extra care!
