Walking and driving instructions
Twelve Mile Creek Falls is roughly a 15 minutes' drive away from Queenstown centre. The road surface is sealed. From Queenstown travel west on Glenorchy-Queenstown Rd for 12 km. There is a dedicated parking, on your left, 400 meters past the 12 Mile Delta Campground entrance. From the main road, turn left onto a side-road (100m-ish) which leads to an extensive parking. Toilets are available here. From the parking, follow a well-established Mt Crichton Loop Track which crosses the main road and follows the Twelve Mile Creek (don’t cross the creek). The path is well-maintained and relatively easy, but (sorry) not suitable for wheelchair/kids strollers. Depends on your speed, in 45 minutes – 1 hours you will reach the Historic Sam Summers Hut. The upper waterfall is just right here. You will see it from the bridge. There is one more waterfall, the lower falls, found a couple of minutes downstream. Look for a un-official side track which leads to the creek bed and a ‘kind of’ waterfall’s lookout. This side track could be quite dangerous and slippery – so extra care is required. From here return via the same route (1.5-2 hrs return), or continue the walk as a loop (2-2.5 hrs return).
