Walking and driving instructions
Wairoa Falls is roughly a 50-60 minutes' drive away from Auckland City. The road surface is sealed, and only the last 1.5 km is an unsealed road. If you drive from Auckland City, travel south on the SH1 motorway until the Papakura Exit, where turn left into Beach Rd which becomes Settlement Rd, and follow it until the intersection with Dominion Rd. Turn right into Dominion Rd then turn left into Hunua Rd and follow it for the next 17.5 km. Turn left into Moumoukai Rd (there is a huge sign 'Hunua Ranges Regional Park) and stay on it for the next 1.5. Turn left into Otau Rd (Wairoa Dam). The carpark is on your left at the beginning of Otau Rd (a few meters past the park entrance). There are no facilities there. Toilets and picnic tables are found near the dam (500m further on to Otau Rd). An unofficial track starts from the parking and leads to the waterfall's base. It descends to the stream, and the waterfall is seen on your right. It takes about 5 minutes to reach the falls, but the track is always slippery so take extra care. Return via the same track. If you've got the right tramping shoes you can explorer the downstream further and find one more waterfall there (the top of the waterfall is seen from the base of Wairoa Falls). Ideally, cross the stream near the base of Wairoa Falls and follow the stream for 5-7 minutes. Almost at the end of the walk you'll need to cross the stream one more time - be extremely careful here! It's a wet-shoes journey. |
