Hunua Falls

Hunua Falls

Hunua Falls is situated in the western section of the Hunua Ranges Regional Park, within the Auckland region. This impressive 30-metre waterfall is part of the Wairoa River, which flows through the remains of an ancient volcano as it travels north toward the township of Clevedon before eventually reaching the Hauraki Gulf. Its stunning beauty and popularity among locals make it one of New Zealand’s must-see waterfalls.

Walking and driving instructions

Hunua Falls are located approximately 45 to 60 minutes’ drive from Auckland City, with sealed roads throughout the journey.

To get there from Auckland, head south on State Highway 1 (SH1) and take the Papakura Exit. Turn left onto Beach Road, which becomes Settlement Road. Continue until you reach the intersection with Dominion Road, then turn right onto Dominion Road and left onto Hunua Road. This scenic, winding road leads to the village of Hunua. Follow it for about 10.5 km until you reach the village. Look out for signs directing you to ‘Hunua Falls’—turn left onto White Road, continue for 1.2 km, then turn right onto Falls Road and follow it for another 2.3 km. You’ll arrive at a large, well-maintained car park managed by Auckland Council, which includes toilets and a lovely picnic area with several tables. Note that the park entrance has an automatic gate: it opens at 8 am and closes at 9 pm during Daylight Saving Time, or at 7 pm outside of Daylight Saving—so plan your visit accordingly.

A short, easy track leads to the lower falls viewing platform, taking just 2 to 5 minutes to walk. This track is accessible for people of all abilities. There’s also a scenic photo frame perfectly positioned to capture memorable shots of the waterfall.

There are two additional walks offering different perspectives of the falls:

  • Hunua Falls Lookout Walk – This easy 15-minute return trail leads to a secondary lookout on the opposite side of the river. Simply cross the footbridge, turn right, and follow the riverbank. You’ll also have the chance to walk down to the waterfall’s base, feel the mist, and experience its power up close.
  • Falls Upper Lookout Walk – A gentle 30-minute return loop trail takes you to the upper lookout. Cross the same footbridge and follow the signposted route.

Please note: swimming at Hunua Falls is not recommended due to a high number of drowning incidents in the area.
