Walking and driving instructions
Maketu Waterfall is roughly a 30 minutes' drive away from Auckland City. The road surface is always sealed. From Auckland head south on the SH-1 for 46km until you reach ‘Ramarama’ exit. Take ‘Ramarama’ exit, turn left into Ararimu Rd and follow it for the next 1.5km, turn left into Pratts Rd, then immediately past the cemetery you reach a small car park (on your left). Leave your car here. There are no facilities there. From the parking cross the clearing and look for a walking path (on your right) which jumps into the bush. First 5 minutes of the track is an uphill section which can be slippery after rain. Then the path descends to the stream bed. There are some stairs to make the descend easier and safer, but still can be slippery after rain, so extreme care is required. The track leads to the waterfall’s base. In summer time it’s a very popular swimming spot among the locals, so don’t forget a towel. Return via the same track. Note: The Maketu Pa- Reserves are managed by the Whatapaka Marae. Please do not remove or disturb any remains. They are an important record of our history and are protected by law. ©Auckland Council |
