Walking and driving instructions
Hidden Falls is roughly a 2-2.5 hours’ drive away from Te Anau or 4 hours from Queenstown. The road surface is sealed, except for the last 16 km. From Te Anau follow Milford Rd (SH-94) for first 87km (1.5hrs), then turn right into Hollyford Rd (well signposted) which is a gravel road with more or less acceptable surface, so in a good weather any vehicle can drive there (could be inaccessible during a heavy rain). There is a parking at the end of Hollyford Rd with a shelter, a table and a long-drop toilet. A well-maintained 3.5-4 hours return Hidden Falls track, which is a first part of Hollyford track, starts from the parking and goes along the Hollyford River up to the Hidden Falls Creek. The track doesn't require any significant climbing or descending. 5 minutes before reaching the waterfall, you'll see a suspension bridge, don't cross the river! You can hear the waterfall from the bridge but can't see it. That's why it's called 'Hidden'. Follow the river up to the waterfall's base and enjoy! If you're a keen tramper, you may be interested to do the whole 56km 4-5 days tramping Hollyford Track, or just stay overnight at Hidden Falls Hut (needs to be booked!). |
