Walking and driving instructions
Whangārei Falls are located about a 10-minute drive from the city center of Whangārei, or roughly 2.5 hours from Auckland. The entire route is on sealed roads. To get there, simply follow the signs for 'Whangārei Falls' once you reach Whangārei, and you'll find a car park on Boundary Road. The area is well-maintained, likely by the local council, and includes toilets as well as a lovely picnic area with a few tables. An easy walking path leads to the upper waterfall lookout, just a 2-minute walk suitable for people of all abilities. To reach the base of the falls, cross the river via a concrete bridge and continue on the track. After crossing the river, you'll encounter another upper lookout—be sure not to miss it. From there, it takes about 5 minutes to reach the base of the waterfall, and another 5 minutes to return to the car park via the same track. Alternatively, you can take the 30-minute loop track, which includes stairs and is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Please be aware that Whangārei Falls may have little or no water flow during dry summer months. If there has been little rainfall for several weeks, the waterfall may not be as impressive. |
