Wairua Falls
Wairua FallsWairua Falls is located on the Wairua River, a 30 minutes' drive away from Whangarei. Usually, it's a waterfall almost without water, but in a rainy season, it looks absolutely unbelievable.

Walking and driving instructions
Wairua Falls is roughly a 2.5-hours' drive away from Auckland or 30 minutes from Whangarei. The road surface is sealed, apart from the last 2 km which is a gravel road. From Whangarei travel west on the SH-14, then in Mangautapere turn right into Mangakahia Rd and follow it for the next 12 km. Turn left into well signposted Wairua Falls Road which is a gravel road. Follow it for the next 2 km until you reach a car park. There are no toilets there, but some picnic tables are available there. The waterfall is seen from the carpark. There is no official track to the falls base - so please do not climb over the fence since it is dangerous. Don’t be disappointed! Wairua Falls is a type of waterfalls which may have little or no water at all during a dry summer. Hence if the summer is dry with no rain for a few weeks, please don’t expect to see a powerful waterfall. |
