Walking and driving instructions

Horseshoe Falls is roughly a 2 hours’ drive away from Invercargill or 1.5-2 hours from Dunedin. The road surface is sealed

From Dunedin travel south on the SH1, then continue on the scenic Chaslands Highway for the next 48 km. A well-signposted carpark is on your right. There are picnic tables but no toilets there.

From the parking follow a signposted Matai Falls Walk which leads you through the native forest to the waterfall's lookout. The walk (10-15 minutes one way) is very easy one and suitable for people of all abilities.

Actually, there are two waterfalls on the Matai Stream - the lower one, Matai Falls, and the upper one, Horseshoe Falls. There is a junction almost at the end of the track: Matai Falls is on your left, and Horseshoe Falls is on your right. It's quite difficult to say which one is better: each has its own charm and beauty.
