Barrs Falls
Barrs FallsActually two waterfalls, Barrs Falls are found at the eastern entry of the Catlins Forest Park. The waterfalls look much more impressive after a rain, though in a dry season you can do an enjoyable walk to the waterfall's lookout.

Walking and driving instructions
Barrs Falls are roughly a 1.5-hours’ drive away from Dunedin, or 2-hours’ from Invercargill. The road surface is sealed, except for the last 3 km which is a gravel road. From Dunedin head south on the SH-1, then in Balclutha turn left into the scenic Chaslands Highway and follow it for the next 32.3km. Turn right into Barrs Falls Rd (well signposted gravel road) and follow it for the next 3.2 km until you reach a car park with a DOC sign 'Barrs Falls Walk' (it is 250m futher drive from the beggining of the reserve which has sign 'Barrs Falls Reserve'). Neither toilets, nor picnic tables are available there. Note: if you are on a large campervan, better stop near 'Barrs Falls Reserve' sign because you won't be able to do a U-turn at the beginning of the track. Follow Barrs Falls Walk from the car park to the waterfalls’ lookout. The walk, 5-minutes one way, is quite easy; all streams are bridged. But it has some stairs at the end of the track, hence it’s not suitable for wheelchairs. The walk leads you through the native forest to the waterfalls' lookout platform. Actually, there are two waterfalls there, one on the left and another one on the right. Both of them must look better after rain. In dry season they are not much impressive and could have little or not water at all. Return via the same route. |
