Walking and driving instructions

Sanders Falls is roughly a 40 minutes’ drive away from Timaru, or 45 minutes from Oamaru, or 50 minutes from KUris. The road surface is sealed, apart from the last 600m which is a gravel road.

From Timaru head south along the main state highway 1. After 38km, turn right onto the SH82 and follow it until you reach Waimate. In Waimate turn right onto Mill Rd. Follow this road for 7.3km until you reach Kelceys Bush. The last 600m is an unsealed road suitable for any type of vehicles. The car park is very big and has track’s signs.

From the parking follow the main foot path for 1-2 minutes to get to a beautiful and well-maintained picnic area. There are picnic tables, an information board with a shelter, a swimming hole, a long drop toilet as well as donation box available there. The main path crosses a tiny stream which is dry most of the times, but it could be quite difficult to cross it after heavy rain.

From the picnic area keep following the main walking trail. The waterfall track branches off from the main walk after 2 minutes of walking. Follow this well-signposted side track for 5 minutes, and it will bring you to the waterfall’s base. To get to it’s base you will need to cross the stream, which could be impassible after heavy rain.

Return via the same track. Total walking time is about 15-20 minutes. There is a short (5 minutes return) side track en route - highly recommend to walk to to get a view of the valley downstream.

You might be interested in walking a 1 hour return Intake Track, which stars from the picnic area as well, and brings you to a several swimming spots and the Rock Pool Weir. The pipe seen at times along the track is the second old Waimate water supply, installed in 1926. There are a few stream crossings required, so be well prepared!
