Walking and driving instructions
Newton's Waterfall is roughly a 1.5hrs' drive away from Christchurch, or just 7 minutes' from Akaroa centre. The road surface is un-sealed for the last 700m. From Akaroa head south-west along Rue Jolie until you reach an intersection with Aylmers Valley Rd. Turn left onto Aylmers Valley Rd and follow it till its end (1.4km). There is a car park at the end of the road with a track sign, but no other facilities (no toilets). From the parking walk through the gate (signed 'Misty Peaks Reserve') and follow a former road for 5-7 minutes, then turn right onto a side track (signed) which in 5 minutes brings you to the waterfall's base. There is a bench near the falls' base, so you can sit and enjoy the view. Return via the same route. Total walking time is 20 minutes. The track is easy and suitable for small children. Newton's Waterfall might have little water (or even dry out completely) during summer. Best time to visit - after a decent rain, or during late Autumn, Winter, early Spring. |
