Whakakai Stream Waterfall
Whakakai Stream WaterfallUnofficially named, Whakakai Stream Waterfall is found in The Karakariki Scenic Reserve located just 25-minutes’ drive far from Hamilton. More a rapid rather than a waterfall, but the walk to the falls through the farmlands is really enjoyable, and it includes two suspension bridges which could be full of fun for the kids.

Walking and driving instructions
Whakakai Stream Waterfall is roughly a 25-minutes’ drive away from Hamilton, or 1.5-2 hours’ from Auckland. The road surface is always sealed, except for the last few meters. From Hamilton head west on the SH-23 for 18 km, then (2-minutes past an intersection with SH-39) turn right to Karakariki Rd and follow it for the next 5.8km. Near the school turn left into Karakariki Valley Rd and follow it for the next 2.4 km. There is an official car park at the end of Karakariki Valley Rd (the car park has a DOC sign). There are no facilities there. From the parking follow a walking Karakariki Track - cross a stream via a suspension bridge, then go through a private farmland. Almost at the end of the track cross the stream again via one more suspension bridge. Continue on to the track for 2 more minutes and you’ll reach the waterfall. Return via the same track, or continue on to the track for 30 more minutes – only climbing, nothing much to see. There is a fence with the gate at the end of the track. DOC doesn't not recommend to go any further – it’s a private land behind the gate. Despite the waterfall is not much impressive, you will really enjoy a quiet and easy walk, may be only cows will be your company on this track. There are picnic tables near the waterfall. A swimming spot at the base of the waterfall is extremely popular among the locals, so don’t forget a towel. |
