Waihi Falls

Waihi Falls

25-meters high, Waihi Falls can be found in Waihi Falls Scenic Reserve, which covers approximately 22 hectares of land. Although the waterfall is not very popular and located in a quiet and peaceful spot, the falls is absolutely beautiful and deserves the visit. The waterfall is included into New Zealand Must See Waterfall's list.

Walking and driving instructions

Waihi Falls is roughly a 1-1.5 hours’ drive away from Dannevirke. The road surface is sealed, apart from the last 2km, which is a gravel road.

From Dannevirke travel east on Miller Rd, which becomes Weber Rd. After 37km turn right onto Road 52. After 11km turn right onto Waione-Horoeka Rd, then turn right onto Waihi Valley Rd, and finally onto Waihi Falls Rd, which is a gravel road. There is a big carpark at the end of Waihi Falls Rd. Picnic shelter, tables, and toilets are available there.

An easy 15-20 minutes return Waihi Falls Walk leads to the waterfall viewing platform, then descends to the waterfall’s base.

From our memory, the viewing platform is reachable in a wheelchair. Unfortunately, the track to the waterfall’s base has some stairs and not suitable for wheelchairs/strollers.

Don’t be disappointed! Waihi Falls is a type of waterfalls which may have little or no water at all during a dry summer. Hence if the summer is dry with no rain for a few weeks, please don’t expect to see a powerful waterfall.
