Mangatiti Falls
Mangatiti FallsProbably the best waterfall on a private land, Mangatiti Falls is especially spectacular after rain or during winter time. Accessible via a private farmland track with a company of bulls and sheep, and by arrangement with the owners Marty and Debbie Hull.

Walking and driving instructions
Mangatiti Falls is roughly a 1.5-hours' drive away from either Ekatahuna or Dannevirke. The road surface is always sealed. From Wellington travel north on the SH-2 until you reach Eketahuna (136 km). Turn right into Alfredton Rd and follow it for the next 14 km, then turn left into Rte52 and stay on it until you reach Pongaroa (43 km). In Pongaroa turn right into Coast Rd, and follow it for about 6.5 km until you see a sign 'Falls' on the right-hand side. Note: This waterfall is located on a private land. A visit should be organized in advance via a phone 06 376 2822 with the owners Marty and Debbie Hull. The owners (very nice and friendly people) will give you all the instructions and necessary information. You'll need to follow a 4WD road (track) for 45 minutes. There are lots of bulls and sheep who will be your company throughout the whole journey. You'll see the waterfall from the top of the hill after about 45 minutes from begging of the walk. Then you'll need to descend to the waterfall's base. Make sure you know what the Taranaki Gate looks like to continue the journey. The waterfall is more impressive after rain. In a dry period, it could be a waterfall with almost no water. Many thanks to the landowners for giving us an opportunity to visit this spectacular waterfall. |
