Walking and driving instructions
Lupton Falls is roughly a 15 minutes' drive away from Ohakune Village or 50 minutes from National Park Village. The road surface is always sealed. From Ohakune travel north on Goldfinch St, which becomes Mangawhero Terrace and finally becomes Ohakune Mountain Rd. Stay on this road for 11.5 km. There is a well signposted ('Waitonga Falls') parking at Ohakune Mountain Rd (on your right). There are no facilities there. From the parking follow Waitonga Falls track until you reach the Waitonga waterfall. Then follow the track which leads to the Lupton Hut until the first river crossing. Look to the left, you'll see the top of the waterfall. Turn left and follow the river bed up to the waterfall's base. Return via the same track, or you can walk to the Lupton Hut and stay there overnight. Note: There is NO official track to the waterfall. You have to follow the river bed. Please be careful and have the appropriate gear (at very least boots). |
