Walking and driving instructions
Waitonga Falls is roughly a 15 minutes' drive away from Ohakune Village or 50 minutes from National Park Village. The road surface is always sealed. From Ohakune travel north on Goldfinch St, which becomes Mangawhero Terrace and finally becomes Ohakune Mountain Rd. Stay on this road for 11.5 km. Unless you want to walk to this waterfall via a river-bed, don't park your car at Waitonga Falls carpark, instead drive for a few more meters until you see a small parking area (on your right). The waterfall is seen from Ohakune Mountain Rd and doesn't require any tramping or walking activities. A closed approach is possible, with care. Leave your car at Waitonga Falls carpark, follow the Waitonga Falls walk for a minute until you reach a bridge. You need to descend to river-bed here and follow it for a few minutes (roughly 15 min). There is NO official track to the waterfall. You have to follow the river bed. Please be careful and have the appropriate gear (at very least boots). |
