Mokoroa Falls

Mokoroa Falls

Mokoroa Falls comprises two waterfalls: Houheria Stream Falls (shown on the right in the panoramic gallery image) and Mokoroa Falls itself (featured in the main photo). Both waterfalls appear especially impressive during the rainy season.

Walking and driving instructions

The Goldie Bush Walkway is reopened.

Mokoroa Falls is located about a 45-minute drive from Auckland City. The road is sealed for most of the journey, with the last 2 km being gravel.

From Auckland, drive west on the SH-16 motorway for 21 km, then turn left onto Taupaki Road, which becomes Waitakere Road. In Waitakere, turn right onto Bethells Road, then immediately turn right again onto Wairere Road and follow it for about 4.5 km. Next, turn right onto Horsman Road, a gravel road, and continue for 2 km until you reach the car park at the end. There are no facilities available at the car park.

A well-maintained 40-minute walking track, the Mokoroa Falls Track, leads to an upper viewing platform overlooking Mokoroa Falls. From this platform, you can see the falls clearly, though only the top of Houheria Stream Falls is visible. This section of the track has no stairs, making it suitable for wheelchairs and strollers with care.

From the upper lookout, wooden stairs descend to the base of both waterfalls. To get a better view, you will need to cross the stream. However, during flooding, access to the base is not possible, so it’s best to enjoy the falls from the lookout in such conditions. On fine days, the area is an ideal spot for a picnic.

You can return via the same 40-minute track, or if you’re reasonably fit, continue along the Mokoroa Stream Track, which involves several stream crossings and passes a few beautiful cascades. This route then connects to the Goldie Bush Walkway. Choosing this option will extend your return trip to about 3 to 4 hours.

Most of the photos shared here were taken after heavy rain. During dry weather, the waterfalls may have very little water, as shown in the final photo in the gallery.

Special thanks to Tony Searle for contributing several excellent photos of the waterfalls, which can be viewed in the gallery
