Walking and driving instructions
Fairy Falls is located approximately a 40-minute drive from Auckland City, with sealed roads the entire way. There are two main routes to reach the car park: one option is to drive toward Piha and then turn right onto Scenic Drive; alternatively, you can head toward Bethells Beach and turn left onto Scenic Drive. The car park, clearly signposted, is located along Scenic Drive. Please note that there are no facilities (such as toilets) available at the car park. To begin the walk, cross the main road from the car park and follow the Fairy Falls Track. The first part of the trail is an easy and enjoyable walk through native bush. The second section features a long staircase that leads from the top of the upper falls down to the base of the lower falls. The walk to the lower falls usually takes between 20 and 45 minutes, although the official signage suggests 45 minutes; this estimate is more suitable for a slower, more leisurely pace. The pool at the base of the lower falls is a popular spot for children to play and explore, and it’s common to see other families there. From the lower falls, you have two options: continue hiking for another 45 minutes to complete the trail at Mountain Road (then return to Scenic Drive via the Old Coach Road Track), or simply retrace your steps. Please note that the return walk involves climbing stairs, so it typically takes between 40 and 60 minutes. A quieter alternative route to Fairy Falls starts from Mountain Road. To access it, turn off Scenic Drive onto Mountain Road, where you’ll find a small parking area. From there, follow the Fairy Falls Track—signage indicates it takes around 30 to 45 minutes. The first part of this trail descends through forest, while the second section follows a stream, including a few crossings that may leave your feet wet after rain. This route brings you to the base of the lower falls, where you can choose to climb the stairs to the upper falls or return the way you came. |
