Te Reinga Falls

Te Reinga Falls is located on the Wairoa River; 2-hours’ drive away from Napier. Officially, there are four waterfalls, and they are spectacular; however the view is not perfect due to limited access - the waterfalls are seen only partially from the official lookout.

Walking and driving instructions

Te Reinga Falls is roughly a 2-hours’ drive away from Napier or 1-hour’s from Gisborne. The road surface is always sealed.

From Napier head north-east on the SH-2 for 118km. In Wairoa turn left into the SH-38 (Frasertown Rd) and follow it for the next 7km. Turn right into Tiniroto Rd and follow it for the next 25.5km. Turn left into Ruakituri Rd, cross the river via a vehicle bridge. DOC signed car park is found on your left immediately past the bridge. There are no facilities there.

An easy 5-minutes’ walk starts from the parking and leads to the waterfall's lookout. According to the Topo Map, there are 4 waterfalls there; however, not all of them are seen from the viewing platform. It’s an ideal place for taking photos using a drone.

Unfortunately, there is no official track to the falls’ base or a better lookout. There are unofficial tracks which lead through the private land to better waterfall's view, but we highly recommend to keep to the official track.
