Walking and driving instructions
Kohuroa Stream Waterfalls are roughly a 1 hour 20 minutes' drive away from Auckland, or just 25 minutes from Warkworth. There is a Toll Road if you drive from Auckland. Don't forget to pay NZD 2.30 each way. From Auckland head north on the SH-1, in Warkworth turn right onto Sandspit Rd which becomes Matakana Rd and then becomes Leigh Rd. In Leigh turn right onto either Grand View Rd or Matheson Bay Rd which brings you to Matheson Bay Reserve. There is a good-size parking here with all sorts of facilities, including children’s play area, public toilets, changing rooms and a cold outside shower. Vehicle access gates to the reserve are locked at night. An easy walking 30-40-minutes' return Matheson Bay Bush Walk starts from the parking, goes via the flat grassed area and then follows the Kohuroa Stream. In 5 minutes or so, you will reach the first waterfall with a large swimming hole. There are more waterfalls upstream - just follow the main path. The most beautiful and tallest one is almost at the end of the walk. Return via the same trail (30-40 minutes return), or you can walk it as one-way track (the walk finishes at Leigh Rd). There is a great swimming hole with a rope en route, hence it's a popular place to cool down during hot summer days. |
