Walking and driving instructions
Waitonga Falls is roughly a 15 minutes' drive away from Ohakune Village or 50 minutes from National Park Village. The road surface is always sealed. From Ohakune travel north on Goldfinch St, which becomes Mangawhero Terrace and finally becomes Ohakune Mountain Rd. Stay on this road for 11.5 km. There is a well-signposted parking at Ohakune Mountain Rd (on your right). There are no facilities there. A walking 1.5-hours' return (more or less easy walk) Waitonga Falls track leads to the base of the Waitonga waterfall (on the main photo). The walk goes through the beech forest and a plateau bog with mountain reflection pools. There is one more waterfall which drops to the same river as Waitonga Falls. You won't miss it when you look at Waitonga Falls, just turn your head and look to the right. Return via the same track. Alternately, if you visit this waterfall as part of Round the Mountain Track, just continue the track. |
