Walking and driving instructions
Six Mile Creek Waterfall is roughly a 10 minutes' drive away from Murchison, or 1 hour 40 minutes from Nelson. The road surface is sealed. From Murchison head south along Matakitaki Rd. You will reach a small car park (on the left side of the road) after 9.5km of driving. There is an information board with a map there, as well as a sign “Six mile - Matakitaki - walkway”. No other facilities are available there (the nearest toilets are in Murchison). From the parking follow a well-established walking path, first part of which is a steep uphill section (hardest part), but there’s a bench at the top where you can rest and enjoy the views. From here it is pretty much a flat path, which can be walked as a loop. The waterfall is seen at the end of the track, follow signs “Walkway to Intake”. The trail brings you to a viewing platform above the old weir. The waterfalls and rapids are seen from the platform. Walk the track as a loop. Total walking time is about 1 hour (the DOC sigh says -1.5hrs, but it’s quite pessimistic estimation). |
