Walking and driving instructions
Wairuru Falls is located about a 2-hour drive from Christchurch, or approximately 25 to 30 minutes from central Akaroa. The final 5.5 kilometres of the journey are along an unsealed gravel road. From Akaroa, head north on State Highway 75, then turn right onto Long Bay Road. Follow the road as it climbs uphill, then descends past the main entrance to Hinewai Reserve. A few hundred metres beyond the entrance, the road turns to gravel. It’s a typical narrow and winding New Zealand rural road, so please drive with caution. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended in wet conditions. There are two car parking options. The main car park (linked in the description) is located around 100 metres after crossing the Narbey Stream bridge. It’s spacious and includes a long-drop toilet and an information board with maps. The second parking area—recommended for a shorter walk—is situated right beside the bridge. From the main car park, walk back along the road to the Narbey Stream bridge, which takes about 5–7 minutes. Alternatively, if using the second car park, you can begin the walk directly from there. The track is clearly signposted, with maps available at the entrance. Follow the well-maintained, wide track upstream for about 10–15 minutes, enjoying scenic views of the stream along the way. At the first track junction, turn right toward Wairuru Falls. After crossing the stream via a footbridge, the path narrows and can become muddy, especially after rain. A short uphill climb of about five minutes leads to a spectacular view of the waterfall. You can get closer to the base of the falls, but supervision of children is essential near the water and steep areas. Return via the same path. The total walking time is around 40 to 50 minutes, and the track is generally easy, except for the final section near the falls. For those wanting a longer walk, you can continue along the Valley Track, which eventually connects with the main (upper) entrance to Hinewai Reserve. This extended route takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and features several other waterfalls along the way. The best time to visit is after substantial rainfall, or during late autumn, winter, or early spring, when the falls are at their most impressive. |
