Walking and driving instructions
Wentworth Falls is roughly a 2.5 hours' drive away from Auckland or 1.5 hours' from Tauranga. The road surface is sealed, except for the last 3-5 km which is a gravel road. From Tauranga travel north on the SH-2, then in Waihi turn right into SH-25 and follow it for the next 27 km. Turn right into Wentworth Valley Rd and follow it for the next 5 km until you reach a car park. There is a river ford at the end of the road, but almost all vehicles can make it. Alternatively, leave the car near the river ford and continue the trip by foot (300-500m). There is a car park at the end of Wentworth Valley Rd with toilets and picnic area. From the parking follow the Wentworth Falls track up to the waterfall lookout. The track (roughly 2-2.5 hours return) is an easy walk which doesn't require any significant climb/descent or river crossings. There is a viewing platform at the end of the track which gives you a good view of the waterfall. A closer approach to the waterfall/better view is possible, with care, using an unofficial track which brings you to the waterfall's base. Return via the same track. Access is also possible across the main range to Maratoto Road (5 hours), but this is recommended for experienced trampers only. |
