Walking and driving instructions

Piroa Falls is roughly 1.5-2 hours' drive away from Auckland City or 45 minutes from Whangarei. There is a Toll Road if you drive from Auckland. Don't forget to pay NZD 2.20 each way.

From Auckland travel north on the SH-1 for 113 km, then turn left into a gravel Waipu Gorge Rd and follow it for the next 7 km. A small carpark is on your right and has a sign 'Piroa Falls'. There are no facilities there.

An easy 20-minutes return walk starts from the carpark and leads to the waterfall's base. Firstly walk down the stairs, then cross the river over a concrete bridge, and follow the river until you see the falls. The track is an easy one but not suitable for a wheelchair.

At the end of the path, you will find a concrete table for a picnic with the view of the waterfall. The benches are very cold, so don't forget to take something warm with you if you've got kids.
