Lucas Creek WaterfallA hidden gem, unofficially known as Lucas Creek Waterfall, is tucked away in the heart of Albany. Easily accessible and especially impressive after rainfall, this beautiful waterfall remains largely overlooked and doesn’t receive the recognition it truly deserves. It’s a perfect spot for those seeking a peaceful nature escape close to the city.

Walking and driving instructions
Lucas Creek Waterfall is located about a 20-minute drive from Auckland City Centre or roughly 15 minutes from Silverdale. The roads are fully sealed throughout the journey. From Auckland, head north on State Highway 1 (SH-1) until you reach the Albany exit (Albany Expressway). Take the exit, turn left, and follow the expressway for about 3 kilometers. Just before crossing the bridge over Lucas Creek, turn right onto Gills Road and park along the side of the road. There are no facilities here apart from the park entrance. From this point, you can walk upstream along the creek for 5 to 10 minutes to reach the waterfall. Walking trails are available on both sides of the creek. Alternatively, you can return to the bridge over Lucas Creek on the main highway. Just past the bridge on the left, there is a footpath that descends to the creek and leads to a waterfall lookout. This route takes only about 2 minutes from the highway. The lookout features a bench where you can sit and enjoy the view of the waterfall. You can return the same way or continue for another minute to reach the top of the waterfall. This section is a concrete path without stairs, making it accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. The best time to visit Lucas Creek Waterfall is after a good rainfall. For optimal photo opportunities, choose a cloudy day. |
