Ketetahi Falls
Ketetahi FallsOne of the most significant waterfalls along the Tongariro Alpine Crossing Track, un-officially named, Ketetahi Falls is located in Tongariro National Park. The waterfall is easy accessible from the Ketetahi parking and it’s a nice spot for the final stop if you’re doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing Track.

Walking and driving instructions
Ketetahi Falls is roughly 30 minutes’ drive away from either National Park or Whakapapa Village; or 1-1.15 hours’ from Taupo. The road surface is always sealed, except for the last hundreds of meters, which are a gravel road. From National Park travel east on the SH-47 for 26.5km, then turn right into the SH-46 and follow it for the next 7km until you see a sign ‘Tongariro Alpine Crossing Track’. Turn right and follow a gravel road for 120m until you reach a car park. If you organize a transport to walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing Track, you don't need to worry about the road. Comfortable bus will drop you at the beginning of the track, then pick you up from the end of the track. There is a huge car park at the end of Tongariro Alpine Crossing with a shelter, toilets and a picnic area. The parking is always busy, especially in the afternoons when buses pick up the hikers. From the parking follow the Tongariro Alpine Crossing Track for 10-15 minutes (this section is almost flat) until you see a ‘lookout pole’. Turn right into a 5 minutes’ side track which brings you to the waterfall’s base. Return via the same track; or if you doing the whole Tongariro Alpine Crossing then you’ll see this waterfall almost at the end of the track. |
