Bridal Veil Falls

Bridal Veil Falls

One of many waterfalls with the same name, Bridal Veil Falls is located in the heart of Arthur's Pass National Park. Although the waterfall is seen from the highway, it’s still better to walk up to the waterfall's lookout via a pleasant track.

Walking and driving instructions

Bridal Veil Falls is roughly a 2-hours’ drive away from Christchurch or 1.5-hours’ from Greymouth. The road surface is always sealed.

If you drive from either Christchurch or Greymouth, take the SH-73 until you reach Arthur's Pass Village. You can leave your car either near the Information Center, or, what’s more recommended, turn onto Punchbowl Rd (signposted off the highway) where you find a huge carpark with a couple of picnic tables and toilets.

From the parking follow a moderate 1,5-hours’ return Bridal Veil Falls track. First 5-10 minutes the track follows a popular Devils Punchbowl Waterfall Track, then it branches off and climbs to a hill. Within 20-25 minutes you reach a wooden lookout platform which provides a view of the waterfall. Unfortunately, there is no other spot along the track where you can see the falls better or closer.

From here, you can either return (total walking time: 40-45 minutes) or continue to walk the track. The track descends to the Bridal Veil Creek and crosses it via a footbridge. A lower waterfall (honestly, more cascades than a waterfall) is seen from this bridge. If you decide to continue the walk, then you need to either organize transport from the other end of the track (total walking time: 45 minutes) or return via the same track (total walking time: 1.5 hours).

The waterfall is also seen from the highway (on your right) when you drive towards Greymouth. There is no any official parking. However, you can always find a spot on a road-side and leave your car safely there. Admit the falls’ beauty from a distance!
