Wairere Falls

Wairere Falls

One of the tallest and most attractive waterfalls in the North Island, Wairere Falls is located in Kaimai Range/Waikato. The waterfall is extremely tall and can be seen even from SH 27; however, the falls' views are really impressive from the waterfall's lookouts thus 1.5 hours return track worth it. The waterfall is included in New Zealand Must See Waterfalls list.

Walking and driving instructions

Wairere Falls is roughly a 2.5-hours' drive away from Auckland or 45 min from Tauranga. The road surface is always sealed.

If you drive from Auckland, travel south on the SH-1, then turn left onto the SH-2 and follow it for the next 36km. Then turn onto the SH-27 southbound and follow it for the next 65.5km, turn left into Wardville Rd (near Waharoa) and stay on it for the next 9.5km. In Gordon turn right into Old Aroha Rd and follow it for the next 6km, then turn left into Goodwin Rd (well signposted). Drive for 850m to reach a large parking at the end of Goodwin Rd. There are a few picnic tables and a long-drop toilet (follow the track for 2-5 minutes).

A moderate 1.5-hours' return Wairere Falls track leads to the waterfalls lower viewing platform. There is a couple of benches along the way where you may have some rest. The first part of the track is quite simple and goes through the bush. The second one consists of a series of the stairs. A reasonable level of fitness is essential. Here, you'll see some beautiful cascades which look stunning on photos.

You may be interested in climbing to the waterfall’s top. All you need is just to follow the Wairere Falls track – when you reach the viewing platform, where most of the people are turning back, you’ll need to turn left and climb further. There is an upper waterfall's lookout at the end of the track opening the view to the falls top and beautiful cascades. Please allow 3-4 hours to make the whole trip.

Despite the fact that the track is not suitable for wheelchairs and strollers, even if you’re in a wheelchair you’ll see the whole waterfall from the road (you even don’t require to leave a car).
