Walking and driving instructions
McLean Falls is roughly a 1.5-hours’ drive away from Invercargill or 2-hours from Dunedin. The road surface is sealed, which becomes a gravel road for the last 3 km. From Dunedin head south on the SH1, then in Balclutha turn left into the scenic Chaslands Highway and follow it for the next 67 km. When you see a sign ‘McLean Falls’, turn right into Rewcastle Rd, which is a gravel road. There is a huge carpark at the end of the road with toilets and a nice picnic area. An easy 40-minutes return McLean Falls Walk leads you to the lower waterfall lookout, then to the upper one. The lower waterfall viewing platform is reachable within 2 minutes after crossing the river via a footbridge. From here, the stairs lead to the upper waterfall. Another 5 minutes and you'll see the upper waterfall. The track is not suitable for wheelchairs. It's quite easy to miss the upper waterfall (on the main photo) because the lower one (first photo on the Gallery) is already very much impressive. Please refer to the main photo to make sure that you wouldn't miss the best waterfall in Southland. |
