Walking and driving instructions

Waiotemarama Falls is roughly a 15 minutes' drive away from Opononi or 2-2.5 hours' from Whangarei. The road surface is sealed, except for the last 6 km which is a gravel road.

From Opononi head east on the SH-12 for 2.5 km, then turn right into Waiotemarama Gorge Road which is a gravel one and follow it for the next 6.3 km until you reach a car park (on your left and has a DOC sign). There are no facilities there.

Waiotemarama Waterfall Loop Walk starts from the parking and leads to the waterfall's base. The track goes through a bush, and it takes just 15-20 minutes to reach the falls. For the best photos we would recommend to visit this waterfall after rain, also you'll need to cross the steam which can be a 'wet-shoes'.

Return via the same track, or you can walk the whole loop walk. The loop will take about 2.5 hours and can be very slippery, so take extra care!
