Walking and driving instructions

Mangamate Waterfall is roughly a 1hr 20minutes' drive away from Rotorua. The road surface is gravel for the last 500m.

From Rotorua head south-east on the SH-5 until an intersection with SH-38, then turn left onto SH-38 and stay on it for the next 55.7km. Turn right onto Minginui Rd, which is a sealed road. Follow this road for 7 kilometers until you reach a turn-off leading to a campsite, turn right onto a side gravel road and follow it until you reach a big car park and the camping (roughly 500m). There are picnic tables, a shelter, a campsite and a long-drop toilet there.

The waterfall is seen from a car park/campsite, but, of course, it is better to walk for 1-2minutes to get a better view. Closer approach is possible.

It is a great spot for a summer picnic, or camping. Kinds would enjoy kayaking on the river and swimming in a relatively deep and big swimming hole.
