Walking and driving instructions

Lucas Creek Waterfall is roughly a 20 minutes' drive away from Auckland Center or 15 minutes' from Silverdale. The road surface is always sealed.

From Auckland travel north on the SH-1 until you reach Albany exit (Albany Expy). Take Albany Expy exit, turn left and follow the highway for the next 3km. Cross the Lucas Creek over the bridge, then immediately past the bridge turn right into Perekia Street. There is plenty of parking there. Alternatively, you can turn left from the main highway into The Avenue and leave your car on the side of the road.

You have three options to reach the waterfall:

1. From the parking walk back along the highway until you get to the bridge over the Lucas Creek. A footpath is to the left immediately past the bridge. The path descends to the creek and leads to the waterfall lookout. It takes only 2 minutes to reach the waterfall from the highway. Lookout has a nice bench where you can sit and enjoy the waterfall's beauty. Return via the same track, or if you wish you can walk one more minutes to the waterfall's top. This track is a concrete path which doesn't have any stairs; hence it's suitable for wheelchair and kids strollers.

2. From the parking on the Perekia Street, follow a well-maintained path which follows the creek (it starts behind the parking). You'll need to walk upstream, not downstream. First 2-3 minutes the walking path is made of wood, then it jumps into the bush and becomes a typical New Zealand track, gravel and muddy. Follow it for 1-2 minutes, until you reach the clearing, the track jumps back into the bush on the opposite side of the clearing. Here, you'll find one picnic table. Continue on to the track for 1-2 minutes, and you'll reach the waterfall's base. Return via the same track, or if you wish you can walk one more minutes to the waterfall's top.

3. From the main highway, turn right into Gills Rd and follow it until you reach the official car park (on your left). From here, walk upstream along the creek for 5-10 minute until you reach the waterfall. Walks are available on the both sides of the creek.

The first option is easier and on a rainy day is cleaner, however, for the best photos we would recommend the second or third one due to a better lookout.
