Walking and driving instructions

There is no way for private cars to drive directly to Doubtful Sound (like you can do for Milford Sound), so Doubtful Sound Cruise, either full day or overnight, needs to be booked from Te Anau or Queenstown. The cruise consists of a bus tour from Te Anau/Queenstown up to Manapouri Lake, then a boat tour crossing the Manapouri Lake, then (optional) a guided tour to the underground power station, then again bus through the Wilmot Pass, and at the end you'll do 2 hours or overnight cruise by boat along the Doubtful Sound.

Stella Falls is the second waterfall you'll see during the journey. The waterfall can be seen from Wilmot Pass Road 10 minutes after Cleve Garth Falls and a couple of minutes before Lyvia Waterfall. Tours buses usually don't stop near the waterfall, but it can be seen from bus's windows.

If you have stay in Doubtful Sound or have any free time there, you can do Old Doubtful Sound Track (3 hours return) which leads to the waterfall's base.

The lagest fiord in New Zealand, Doubtful Sound is a paradise for waterfalls/mountains/ocean lovers. Also you might be lucky to see seals and bottlenose dolphins!

The journey to the Doubtful Sound is quite a different from the Milford Sound ones. With no direct road access, the only way you can to get to Doubtful Sound is by a cruise across Lake Manapouri and a coach trip over Wilmot Pass.

One of the best multi-days track starts almost at Doubtful Sound - Dusky Track.  Challenging 6-8 days track is recommended for experienced trampers only. You will see one of the most remote big fiord in New Zealand - Dusky Sound.
