Walking and driving instructions

Fantail Falls is roughly a 1-hour' drive away from Wanaka. The road surface is always sealed.

If you drive from Wanaka, take SH-6 (Haast Highway) and stay on it for 87km until you see a sign “Fantail Falls” (on your right) and a car park. There are no facilities there.

An easy 10-minutes' return Fantail Falls Walk starts from the carpark and leads to the waterfalls lookout. The track is suitable for people of all abilities.

The waterfall is located on the opposite side of the river, but you don't require to cross the river because the waterfall is fully visible from the lookout.

If you wish, you can, with care, cross the river and walk up to the waterfall's base.
