Walking and driving instructions
Te Wairere Waterfall is roughly a 3.5-hours’ drive away from Auckland or 30-minutes from Paihia. The road surface is always sealed. Make your way to Kerikeri. In Kerikeri follow the main street (Kerikeri Rd). When in the town center, turn right into Cobham Rd and follow it for the next 800m until you reach a bridge over the Wairoa Stream. A car park, on you right, just before the bridge has no facilities. From the parking, cross the street, then cross the Wairoa Stream via the vehicle bridge, turn left and follow the stream. In 5 minutes you reach the beginning of the track (gravel path) which descends to the stream. Follow this path for 5 minutes until you reach the top of the falls. It is very slippery here, hence be very careful! Kids must always be supervised. From here, follow the track which descends to the falls' base. It's the most challenging part of the walk and takes 5-10 minutes. As per June 2017, the construction of the track is still going on, and this part of the track is quite steep and muddy. Please don't attempt to walk it with kids. Return via the same track. Above, we described the shortest option to visit the waterfall. If you have a bit more time, we would recommend to start your walk from the end of Alderton Dr. From here, find the beginning of Wairoa Stream track and walk it upstream. You will reach the falls in 40-50 minutes. |
