Walking and driving instructions

Hunua Falls is roughly a 45-60 minutes' drive away from Auckland City. The road surface is always sealed.

If you drive from Auckland City, travel south on the SH1 motorway until the Papakura Exit, where turn left into Beach Rd which becomes Settlement Rd, and follow it until the intersection with Dominion Rd. Turn right into Dominion Rd then turn left into Hunua Rd. Hunua Rd is a winding road which goes to Hunua Village. Follow this road for 10.5 km until you reach Hunua Village. In the village watch for the signs ‘Hunua Falls’, turn left into White Rd and follow it for the next 1.2 km. Turn right into Falls Rd and follow it for the next 2.3 km until you reach a huge car park. The area is very well maintained by Auckland Council and has toilets as well as a beautiful picnic area with a few tables. There is an automatic gate at the park entrance, which is open from 8 am and closed from 9 pm (Daylight savings), or 7 pm (Non-Daylight Savings). Hence, make sure you plan your visit properly.

An easy walking track leads to the lower waterfall’s lookout. It takes 2-5 minutes to reach the falls, and the track is suitable for people of all abilities. All visitors have an opportunity to take an unforgettable photo through a beautiful ‘photo frame’ which is pointing out to the waterfall.

There are two more options to enjoy the waterfalls from the different perspectives:

  • Hunua Falls Lookout Walk – an easy 15 min return track takes all visitors to the opposite side of the river to the second lower lookout. Just cross the river via a footbridge, turn right and follow the river. Do not miss an opportunity to walk to the waterfall's base, touch the water and enjoy the falls power.
  • Falls Upper Lookout Walk – an easy 30 min return loop track takes all visitors to the upper waterfall lookout. Cross the river via a footbridge and follow the signs.

The waterfall is very popular among the locals, and it’s a very popular swimming spot in the area.
